Day 3 - Rest Day in Matera
Breakfast at the hotel was on the patio outside our room. A nice spot to sit as long as we were in the shade.
We had pre-booked a guided tour of Matera with « Renato Favilli - Guida Turistica Matera » and it worked out great. We met the tour guide Gaetano at a piazza 5 minutes from our hotel. The group was about 20 people and the tour was in English. We got the whole human and architectural history of Matera, with lots of detail on how people lived and how it was reflected in the built environment. The tour lasted 3 hours and finished at the top of the city in the piazza in front of the cathedral. Well worth the time and money!

After the tour, we ate a nice lunch at « Pane e Pommodoro » and then returned to our room for a siesta. Rich was still trying to kill his migraine, so spent some time sleeping, while Robin had a Mother’s Day call with our kids.
We went back out for yet more walking and picture taking as the sun set over this stunning place.
Our feet were tired but we needed to find some dinner. To save some walking, we decided on a pizza place right below our hotel. « Piu Sud » responded with the best meal of the trip so far! Great pizza and a lovely salad, very different from the standard tourist fare all over town.
We finished off the evening with a walk up to the top of the hill to see the city lights. There just happened to be a gelato place along the way, so we had to have a nightcap.
Back on the road tomorrow!
