The Bigs Start Retirement Right! 62

About

Loaded and ready at beginning of 2024 fall tour

I'm Big Red - a nickname originally given me by cycling friends many years ago. I'm a 6' tall red-headed woman. The nickname stuck and that is how I'm known in the local cycling community. 11 years ago, I married an amazing man who is even taller than me, and because we had multiple "Dave's" in our group he became Big Dave. We are now collectively known at "The Bigs"

I have been cycling for more than 35 years, and touring self-supported for about 20 years. I started with a few week-long supported tours that I really enjoyed. I picked up a BikeCentennial (now Adventure Cycling) magazine from the local bike shop. I started reading stories in their magazine and started dreaming of what it would be like to load up your bike and go wherever you wanted without having to be on someone else's route or schedule.

I've done quite a few shorter tours of one to two weeks because of work constraints. In the summer of 2007 I finally had the opportunity to do a cross-country tour. I rode a slightly modified version of the Adventure Cycling TransAm route from east to west. It was everything I thought it would be, and more! My husband has now caught the touring bug and we have been doing one or two short tours each year the last few years.

We just retired in March 2025 and are looking forward to longer tours not constrained by work schedules.

Previous blogs for my early tours, including the cross-country trip are on "the Crazy" website, user llseidita.

Journals since 2021 are on Blogspot under bigredsbiketours.
