Day 23: Dubuque IA Rest Day
Timing is everything! My rest day in Dubuque was mostly rainy. The showers didn’t stop until mid-afternoon. We were supposed to attend my brother-in-law’s softball game, but it was called off. We ended up running a few errands, and just hanging out before heading to dinner.
Dubuque has a really cool riverfront and downtown area. Lots of old brick industrial buildings have been converted into cool lofts, restaurants, and shops. It has a good vibe and there is way more going on than I would expect in a town this size!

There are also lots of bluffs overlooking the city and the Mississippi River, making for some good views, once you climb up the steep hills.
We checked out the 4th Street Elevator….a cable-car system going up one of the steepest hills. Originally built by a business tycoon who didn’t like how long it took his horses to climb back up to his house, it will get you up the slope in just a couple of minutes:
This is the bridge I will be taking over to Illinois tomorrow:
Then after dinner, we went over to Mount Carmel Convent, where there is a view north towards Dubuque. The sun was beginning to set, making for some pretty nice vistas:
It was a really nice visit – I hadn’t been to my sister’s home in Dubuque for 10 years (since she got married!) It was long overdue and good to catch up.
Tomorrow, I head to Mineral Point, WI – which means climbing out of the Mississippi River valley!
