(the discrepancy in our 98.8 miles ridden and Strava's 97.9 miles is because Ken pushed start on his Wahoo .8 miles too late)
Portal's elevation is approximately 4,700 ft. This morning at 7:15 it was 39 degrees with winds from the SW so it felt like 35. We all are tired, but we bundled up and set off back down the gentle 7 mile hill that tortured us yesterday afternoon. This morning with a tailwind we sped down at 20 mph.
We were extremely fortunate to have either a tailwind or sidewind and like yesterday the winds picked up speed by the afternoon. It was a comfortable 70+ degrees, sunny and with winds gusting to 30. We were on NM Hwy 9 all day.
And this is basically what we saw all day.
We did pass the Continental Divide again (lower elevation). This is where the Continental Divide Trail Hikers travel. They can stop at Hachita Food Mart for goodies. It is the only business in Hachita (pop. 49) and we met the owner and another guy who is just a text away from helping hikers and cyclists on the trail. Hachita is very close to the border. We saw the wall again today...
Tailwind pushed us into Columbus, NM. In the middle of nowheresville, there is the Los Milagros B&B and it is wonderful!!!
