Errands - Winterlude 2024 - CycleBlaze

January 15, 2025

Errands

Note: this was a full day but it’s gonna be a short post because I screwed up and included the trip to the bike store in yesterday’s post, but it actually occurred on this day.  That’s the problem with getting so far behind - things start blurring together.

So we’re going to zip through the day and make up ground.  Here’s the actual layout of this day:

I sit in the sun and watch the birds once the day has warmed up enough.

I walk to the optometrist on the campus, hoping I can get some cheap glasses quickly, to wear while I’m waiting for my new ones to arrive in two weeks.  I can’t though - this optometrist doesn’t do quick and cheap.  Instead I buy a pair of Ray-Bans to cut the glare, and they’re terrific.

We go to the bike store, lose a wallet, find it back and at home.  Because we came back to find the wallet we decide to scrap the planned ride to a Julian awash because there won’t be time enough now.  Instead, I just hang out moaning about bruised ribs and Rachael takes a walk.

Later in the day I take the streetcar down to the UPS store to ship off my pile of old Lumixes to someone who hopefully will find some value in them.  Better than just recycling them.

Afterwards I go around rhe corner to Reilly’s for a quick bite, and make an important decision, to announce the Winterlude Nonalcoholic Beer Quesr.

And thats it.  Let’s just look at some pics and try to catch up with the train.

The white-winged dove is back again today, seen by me from my lawn chair out in front.

Scott AndersonTo Karen PoretSo did I. There’s so much diversity here. I took a shot of a skateboarder wheeling up the street too that I meant to include but it didn’t turn out.

In Reilly’s. O’Douls isn’t rhe most inspiring choice I’ve seen, but this is as good a spot as any to announce the new Nonalchoholic Beer Quest.

On Congress, waiting 15 minutes for the eastbound tram. It never comes, because Congress is one way westbound.

Still waiting, but don’t worry. I’ll figure it out in time.

marilyn swettWhere did you ship your Lumix cameras? I will be interested to hear if they can be refurbished. We're taking off today on a cruise to the Caribbean. I'm leaving my Lumix home even though it's easier to carry in a waist pack and am carrying my Kodak to try it out. It's a cheaper version of your new camera with a better zoom than the Lumix (I have the same shaking that you get when you zoom in, although I'm going to try the burst mode to take multiple pictures) . I hope that as I walk around, I will be able to get some nice pictures.

Mark HoffmannScanning world headlines this afternoon I spotted this. Thought of you right away. Doubt there's much here you've not heard about, but here it is: https://www.bbc.com/travel/article/20250117-tucson-arizona-the-ancient-culinary-capital-in-the-us

Scott AndersonTo Mark HoffmannThis is really a spectacular, unique sight, one that’s within a day ride from town. We’ll undoubtedly be going there again this winter sometime. And we’re seeing it at its best, after the completion of a multi year renovation project including rewhitewashing it. The place really gleams now.

Scott AndersonTo marilyn swettI sent them all up to the Grampies. I thought they needed a backup since the renovated one they’re using could easily crap out mid-tour. They know lots of folks and family, so it was just easier to ship them all to one spot.

Mark HoffmannTo Scott AndersonI think they used a photo of the Mission because it is a key Tucson landmark. The gist of the article is about places to eat in Tucson, and how it is (to the BBC writer) a terrific culinary destination. You always find such good meals at great places. I thought there might be something new mentioned. As for cycling to the Mission, it's unfortunate that is not really near the loop, and the shoulders to get there are not great. (At least as of Dec, '23.)
