Day 7 - Canyon Lake to Kyle
What a difference a rest day makes! Even after naps yesterday we were still both tired and ready to go to bed. The extra rest worked! We both felt better packing up this morning and, more importantly, we both felt better riding today.
We can't say enough thanks to Pat and Blake for their hospitality and company. It was a great way to spend a rest day.

Wimberley was a short 12-mile ride from the house this morning. We were able to take beautiful back roads without much traffic and a couple of pretty creek crossings. Of course, when you drop down to the creek crossing on a backroad, there is almost always a steep climb out of the creek bottom! We had two that had climbs from 10 - 12% grade that were longer climbs. They were tough but not as bad as they would have been a day ago before the rest!

In the hill country they use low water crossings that can withstand flooding creeks and rivers. Don't attempt to ride a bike or walk across one of these covered by water. They get slimy and super slick! Look at how clear the water is in the creek!
Right before we got to Wimberley, a group of cyclists on their Saturday morning ride came up behind us. They passed us like we were standing still, but there was lots of cheering for us as they passed!
Wimberley is a very busy little town on the weekends. There are plenty of antique stores, boutiques, and fun restaurants, and it is a weekend getaway destination for nearby cities. Instead of dealing with all the crowds, we went a block passed the square and found a hot dog food truck, Schoolyard Dogs, for our lunch. They have a good variety of different hot dogs. We took our food to go and went to the Blue Hole park down the road for our lunch break.
After leaving Wimberley, the road got busier and there was intermittent construction to deal with. We still had another 12 miles of the steeper hills to deal with as well. I didn't do very good at taking pictures because of this. About 9 miles from Kyle, the hills flattened out some and I was finally able to get out of my granny gear! She deserved a rest after all the work she's done the last few days 😊

We took another rest break in the shade at the St Stephen's cemetary before tackling the last miles into Kyle. It was forecasted to be in the low 90's today so we didn't want to dilly-dally.
We were only about a mile from the hotel when I took my eyes off the sidewalk for a second to check where Big Dave was going and caught this rock with my front pannier. And down I went. Don't worry - the bike is fine! And I just have a couple scratches from my chain ring.

From Big Dave's perspective the worst part of it was that he missed the whole thing!
The Hampton Inn has a pool so we took a quick dip before having a nap. It had to be quick because the water was very cold! Now we need to find some dinner, look at the route for tomorrow, and get some sleep. More tomorrow.....
Today's ride: 32 miles (51 km)
Total: 222 miles (357 km)
