Day 5 - Lockhart to San Marcos

The morning started out a little cool but warmed up as soon as the sun came up behind the trees.  We knew we had a shorter day today which meant we didn't rush to get up. We did get up in time to see Avrin off on his overnight bikepacking trip.

We changed our route to go to San Marcos instead of New Braunfels, because it was easier for both us and Pat and Blake to get in and out of. Pat and Blake live in Canyon Lake and it has grown so much in the last 10 years that there really wasn't a good route for us to ride to their house. They graciously came to San Marcos and picked us up in their truck!

It was another sunny day without a cloud in the sky. We had some pretty patches of wildflowers again today, but not as many as other days with the shorter miles.

Pink (evening) Primrose. My girlfriend from Austin area calls them Buttercups because they smell like butter!

The scenery changed some from predominantly ranch land to more fields of corn.

Corn field - the corn is just popping up.

Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Martindale. They had nice benches in the shade we used for a break.

There are three really pretty rivers in this area - the San Marcos, Guadalupe, and Comal. Tubing is a popular activity in the area! We crossed the San Marcos River on our way to meet Pat and Blake.

There were a couple steep climbs getting out of the river - one was a real leg burner! Outside of those two climbs, the roads have flattened out some, which was much appreciated. As we climbed out of the river, we passed a very old farmstead made of rock.

The rest of the ride took us into down into San Marcos to meet with Pat and Blake. It has been fun catching up with them and having a little time together.

We're taking a rest day tomorrow with Pat and Blake and will figure out our new revised route from here going forward tomorrow.

Today's ride: 24 miles (39 km)
Total: 190 miles (306 km)
