Day 4 - Cistern to Lockhart
Today was a shorter day than the last few and it was much needed with our tired legs!
We slept a little later knowing we didn't have to pack up camp. However, that didn't seem to actually help us get out any quicker in the morning. It appears the donkey liked the taste of Dave’s salty gloves last night, as they were gnawed on and had green donkey slobber on them. But no harm, both were still functional after a wash in the sink.
It was still hilly most of the day and we had a persistent crosswind out of the south as we headed mostly west. The country side was filled with mostly ranch land and cattle again with another cloudless day and blue sky everywhere we looked.

The day was uneventful – which is generally good as bike tours go. We had no services for the first 21 miles today, and we were really ready for a long break with food when we got to the McMahan Country Store. It is at a crossroads and there’s not much else in McMahan.

There was a grill at the store and we got a lunch of tacos and a cheeseburger to refuel the engines. As we sat at the eating bar in the store, we chatted with a nice local man that was an EMT and veteran who lives there.
We knew we only had about 10 miles to Lockhart and another 2.5 miles to camp when we left McMahan. The riding was a little easier with the help of a tailwind on part of it, but was mostly crosswind the rest of the way. It was warm this afternoon so the breeze felt good for that reason, but I still didn’t like it much! The last few miles into Lockhart were busy with traffic but we had a decent shoulder most of the time and the traffic was mostly courteous.
As we rolled into our campsite at Lockhart State Park, our camping neighbor came over to our campsite to say hello. He started asking us if we were doing a Bikepacking.com route as he was headed out in the morning for two nights.
How wild is it to be camped next door to another cyclist, let alone a touring/bikepacking cyclist, at a state park in Texas that only has 20 campsites? Avrin is from New Jersey visiting a brother in Austin and getting a little riding in on the side. We had a great evening of conversation with so much cool biking stuff to discuss!

Dave went into town with Avrin to grab some BBQ at Black's. I decided to do a freeze-dried meal in camp because I hadn't managed a shower yet and wasn't too hungry.
Tonight is another night without enough cell coverage to post an entry so this will be delayed.
We have changed our plan and route for tomorrow a little. We are going to have a shorter than planned day going into a rest day, and am meeting a long-time cycling friend and hanging out in Canyon Lake through our rest day.
Today's ride: 34 miles (55 km)
Total: 166 miles (267 km)
