Are We There Yet?
Our son Joshua asked us in an email today whether we were excited to finally be "Panhandling". I replied that at least until we would get to Missoula, the adventure could not be considered to have begun. But now, having drained our hot tub and charged off our Vancouver Island headed east, I find myself sitting amid a cloud of mosquitoes, in the mountains, watching Dodie putting up the tent. With the smell of wood smoke and mosquitoe repellent in the air, it reaĺly does feel like the adventure has begun,
In truth we are in Manning Park not too far from Vancouver , and only haĺf way to Kelowna, Kelowna in turn is only half way to Missoula, and the cycling begins not in Missoula but 200 km away in Idaho. We aŕe headed for Kelowna to drop off our old friend Marsha, before following the Okanagan River down into the States, by Spokane and actually passing by our Coeur dAlene ultimate destination, before heading on over to Missoula to pick up Avi and Violet.
The route we are following for this first bit is pretty much the classic one for anyone starting out cycling across Canada. So we are casting a wary eye at the hills, leading to the first summit: Alison Pass. Actually, it didn't seem all that tough. Brave words for people gazing out from a VW van!!
Let's see how brave we are when we actually get on the route, any route!. Stay tuned - it's coming soon.
