Tina chimes in
So of course I'd like to talk about wildlife. We saw almost-tame blacktail deer in Port Townsend. We also had one check out our campsite in Colonial Creek Campground, along with that stunning Steller's jay, which Jamie got such a great shot of.
Now we're in mule deer country. There were five this morning by the side of the road. As we approached they were a sea of huge ears. /\ /\. Then they bounded away. Mulies don't run like, say, white-tailed deer. They sproing as though they have pogo sticks for legs. It's so crazy looking.
I've been hearing bunches of wonderful birds, some of which we also have in the east. But a couple of western-only favorites are the western meadowlarks (such a gorgeous song) and the new-to-me black-headed grosbeaks. They sound just like our eastern rose-breasted grosbeaks. It's worth googling these two, they are spectacular birds!
