To Lubeck
So much seems to happen in a day that by the end of it it is surprisingly hard to remember what happened in the morning. This morning’s breakfast was unforgettable though. As well as a good tuck in to all that was offered on the buffet I had a mushroom omlette and very good it was too. Getting out of Wismar was surprisingly easy and it basically was just a matter of following the coast line through various beach resorts and along the cliffs until at last we got to the ferry at Travamude. We had thought we would have to wait sometime for a ferry but it all proved very different. Travamude is situated near the mouth of the long harbour that goes up the Lubeck and it is a really happening place with milling crowds of holiday makers. The ferry ride itself is a real damp squib. Two ferries are going endlessly back and forward carrying loads of cars, bikes and people. The whole journey takes around 2 to 3 minutes.
We were a little concerned about how to get from here to Lubeck but all the good fairies were looking after us. First we stopped for an exceptionally basic lunch on a tree stump beside a main road. As we got going a man on a bike passed us and said ‘Do you know the way to Lubeck’. Then when we said no he said 'Follow me’. Of we set at a fair pace and the extraordinary thing was that after twisting and turning we ended up at a bus stop. We were confused and he told us that the only way to get across the harbour was on this cycle shuttle bus. A few minutes latter it arrived and on we poured with a large group on an organised tour. The trip was free and took us in a tunnel across to the other side of the harbor . We bad farewell to our guardian angel and set of lickity split after the tour group. They were organised so knew where they were going. Finding the Tourist Information wasn’t as easy but eventually I did and found this hotel. It isn’t nearly up to standard of the other 2 nights but is in the centre of the old town and will certainly do. The receptionist not only spoke no English but it was her first day on the job and she was completely unsure of the procedures. Perhaps it should be renamed Faulty Towers,
It was very important to Ken that we should come to Lubeck. Ken is very interested in Organ Music and at the Marian Kirk in Lubeck Buxtahude was the organist and both Bach and Handel came as young men to hear him. Naturally it was on his places to visit. The disappointing thing however is that there is to be a concert tomorrow, never mind we always seem to miss out hearing organs.
