Rainy Days and Saturdays - Twenty-Two Tour - CycleBlaze

Rainy Days and Saturdays

Rain all day and probably tomorrow, too.
But ..... I am beyond fortunate.
Vicki and Jim have a little cottage on Welcome Slough
That they share with touring cyclists via WarmShowers.
They are so incredibly generous.

Vicki has a huge rack of tiny jars -
With sand from 144 beaches all over the world.
If I ever get back to Ocracoke, I'll have to send her some.
And Jim has built the main house from scratch -
With gorgeous, polished porthole doors
And an art moderne curved staircase.

Yannek, a German cyclist, is staying longer.
Sleeping in their boat, but hanging out in the cottage.
He's a university student spending the summer in Canada.
Slight age difference, but it's all o.k.

Yannek has had nothing but rain for his American tour.
So, he's going to chill a few more days and take the train back.
I certainly don't blame him - riding in nonstop rain is a bummer.
Especially on your first tour.

I switched into full cooking mode.
Made my famous yam & black bean soup for everyone last night.
Today started with  - scrambled eggs, ham, onions, peppers & tomatoes.

We sat around doing a lot of nothing all day.
We dropped over to talk with Vicki and Jim
and to play with their dogs, Mimi and Cosmo.
Mimi is a chihuahua mix who cannot get enough affection.

Finally, in the middle of the afternoon we made an excursion into town.
I mean, it's two miles - over the bridge - headwinds & light drizzle.
And chilly. Most normal people wouldn't dream of doing it.
Took in all the sights of downtown Cathlamet.
Stopped in to the little brew pub for bevs.

Yannek in Front of DeEtta's Dad's Locomotive

We saw the old logging railroad engine behind the historical society.
DeEtta Funderburg's father had been the engineer for many years.
Until they switched to truck logging in 1959 and put him out of work.

DeEtta was the youngest  kid in her family - by many years.
And she readily admitted that she was spoiled rotten by her dad.
Every day, when he would come down from the hills in the locomotive
he would slow to a crawl and blow the whistle three times -
just as the engine was coming into the yard.
And DeEtta would run out from the house and jump on
for the last hundred yards.

Rigatoni for dinner - all done with an electric frying pan and crock pot.
But Yannek is 6'6" and terribly underfed the past few weeks.
Then we went over to Vicki and Jim's and talked until late in the night.
Late for me, anyhoo.

Steady rain falling - but dry , well-fed, and cozy.

PS - Shoulda taken more pix - especially of Vicki and Jim.
But all of us were in a very low-gear mood.

Today's ride: 5 miles (8 km)
Total: 105 miles (169 km)
