Nunniong Road to Nowa Nowa - High Country Victoria - CycleBlaze

Nunniong Road to Nowa Nowa

14-20 January 2023

The Culverts - camping area on either side of the road. VERY popular with the horse riding crowd so lots of horse shit, flies and trampled ground around.  Timbarra River permanently flows but treat the water - lots of feral horses around, too, so high nutrient load in this water. No toilets, no picnic tables.

Old Glenmore Huts - these creepy old logging huts burnt down in the 19/20 fires. There is still a small open camping area here right on the road with no shade. No toilets but picnic table and fire ring.

Buchan - public toilets, campground at the Caves State Park - booking online but can also book at Parks Office. Campground has hot showers, flush toilets and laundry - washers and dryers. Used to be a backpackers in town but it is long gone. Pub with food but no accommodation. Small motel. Post office/general store with basics but pretty pricey. Roadhouse has good options and burgers are excellent and use fresh, local beef. Willow Cafe next door is excellent and supposedly has good coffee as owner worked in cafes in Melbourne for 13 years before moving back home. Lots of healthy options and the Persian Love Cake is amazing.

Nowa Nowa - small general store at petrol station. Some fresh fruit and veg available. Some pies and sausage rolls in a warmer. No hot food otherwise. Some frozen meals are available in freezer. Water refill station. Two caravan parks, both expensive. Pub is currently closed.  Plenty of places outside of town that you can wild camp.

Costicks Weir - about 6 kms west of Nowa Nowa  recently refurbished area with two sites, one picnic table and drop toilet. Signposted off rail trail. There is a creek and small weir, but not sure I’d treat and drink that water, especially since it is easy to fill water in Bruthen or Nowa Nowa.  Plenty of places to wild camp in the state forest.

Lakes Entrance - can get here via forest roads or via Gippsland Discovery Trail that takes off from the rail trail. All services. ALDI and other supermarkets. Small bike shop that is also a surf/paddle shop. Seaside resort town so plenty of motels and caravan parks. Bus from Nowa Nowa is about $6 each way.

Gregory GarceauHi Emily, I'm glad you posted this here on Cycleblaze--not because I have any illusions of replicating your tour, but because I just like to read what you write about it.

Emily SharpTo Gregory GarceauThanks, Greg. I don't really want all my text and photos on someone else's site so won't copy my journal here. I don't have time anyway! But I did think that a bunch of maps and notes/resources about what's available would be useful to others, since there isn't much out there about this area, and it's nice to have confirmation that certain pubs, general stores etc did or did not survive COVID. There are not many places to restock food, fuel etc in this area, so you don't want to rely on pre-covid info for basics.
