Getting there
Auckland to Amsterdam
This is the second year running we have transported our own bikes to Europe. It's remarkably straightforward and at no cost so long as we meet the baggage weight limit. We're taking our mountain bikes, not generally known for their lightness, packed into reasonably heavy bike bags. Helmets, jackets, tools and shoes etc take the hanging scale in the garage to 30kg in no time so everything else is crammed into the plane's overhead locker as cabin baggage.
At Schipol airport, we and our massive bags are met by our host, Frans, and taken to his family's houseboat on the outskirts of Amsterdam. Our wee apartment is at one end of the barge, with a steep staircase connecting the above-water living area with the below-decks bedroom. We have a week of exploration ahead. Better get those bikes assembled ...
