Day 29 - In Richmond

We had a relaxing day seeing the sights in Richmond.  We started the day by visiting the Wayne County Historical Museum.  It is a very well-done museum that had a wide range of exhibits.

One room was all about Indiana transportation and included displays about the National Road (now named US40 and which runs through the center of Richmond), the canal system of the early 1800's, as well as the railroads and aviation which came along later.

This Conestoga Wagon was part of a diorama about the National Road.

Another room in the museum was dedicated to Richmond's auto industry.  Richmond was home to 10 different automobile manufacturers.

All of the cars show in this photo were manufactured in Richmond.

Our next stop was the Wayne County Courthouse, which is an impressive structure.

The Wayne County Courthouse. Completed in 1893, it required 600 rail-car loads of Indiana limestone and 125 stonecutters. In addition to all the limestone it contains 3 million bricks.

After leaving the courthouse, we went to the Model T Museum.  This museum is owned by the Model T Club of America and they were holding their annual "Model T Homecoming" which is a three-day event.  The festivities were just winding down when we arrived, but there were still several Model T's in the parking lot.  We enjoyed a late lunch of hot dogs and ice cream provided by the Boy Scouts who were having a fund raiser for their summer camping program.

The cars were from all over the Midwest and beyond
