Day 108 - Ione to Colville

I got a later start than planned today because I frittered away the morning on the computer.  I got up at 6 planning to leave by 8, but all of a sudden it was 8:45 and I hadn't even had my shower.  It was about 9:20 before I got rolling - so much for beating the heat!

The first 4 miles were easy - it was nice and flat.  Then I turned onto WA-20 and all of a sudden things weren't so easy.   As soon as I made the turn I faced a 4-mile 1,000 ft climb.  I knew it was there, but still, looking up at a mountainside, knowing you have to climb it, is daunting - at least for me.  The entire climb was in the 6-7% range, so I just geared down and went at it.  About 1/2 mile into the climb, I did have to stop and shed my long sleeve shirt, because even though it was still cool outside, I wasn't.  Other than that break, I made it to the top without having to stop again.

The rest of the ride was easy, except for 2 short, but steep, climbs.  In fact, I actually ended up the day almost 500 ft. lower than where I was at the beginning of the day - not really a good thing, considering the situation.

If you remember, in Day 102 - Whitefish to Eureka, I was carping that Eureka was at an elevation to 2,600 ft and Sherman Pass had an elevation of 5,575 ft and was only 6 days away.  Well, in Colville, I'm at an elevation of 1,614 and Sherman Pass is 38 miles into tomorrow's ride.  I'll let you know how the legs do!!

The Riverview Motel in Ione is aptly named. It was a very nice small motel.

Gene pulled up while I was stopped, shedding some clothes, on the big climb of the day. We had a quick roadside chat and then took off again.

Gene soon pulled away from me (EVERYONE is faster than me on a climb!). I saw him one more time, when I caught up to him a C-store about 10 miles down the road. He was just getting ready to leave when I pulled in.

WA-20 was another very quiet road.

Ken GassKerry, is the Osoyoos fire smoke impacting you now? Also, keep watch on the Sourdough Mtn. fire west of Rainy Pass (Hwy 20) above the west end of Diablo Lake.
