Day 055 - East Tawas to Alpena

It was a great ride today.  US23 had a nice wide shoulder, and the back roads were all in good shape.

A colorful row of rental cottages just north of East Tawas.

I stopped to get a photo of the beach, but then saw the Great Lakes freighter in the distance. It is still hazy from the Canadian wildfires.

Unlike pine plantations in the South, this land looks like it is regenerating itself naturally after being clear cut.

This reef is the reason for the lighthouse. It extends for 1.5 miles into the lake.

This boat looked like it was made from galvanized steel.

Rachel is a volunteer at the lighthouse. While talking about our trip, she said she grew up in Cut Bank, MT and used to work at the Super-8 there. We will be staying in the same motel in late July.

Red barn of the day. I did not pass many farms on today's ride.

I came across this deer shortly after leaving the lighthouse. We looked at each other for quite awhile.

Eventually, it got bored and resumed grazing.

Nancy and Gordy were nice enough to let me go in their back yard to take the photo of the swans.

About 47 miles into the ride, I did come to a construction zone where US23 was closed.   Luckily, Gordy had mentioned it and said that the detour was only about a mile longer. However, he thought that I could get through as there were houses in the section that was closed.  He was correct, and I only had to ride on dirt for about a mile before I got to the other side.

I had the road all to myself as the workers were done for the day.
