Day 124 - Pontiac to Watseka

We started our day by riding into downtown Pontiac.  The town really embraces it's location on Route 66.  The ACA Route 66 route goes through the town as well.

I'm not sure about this "RV". It's parked outside the Route 66 museum.

There are little car and truck models all around town.

After cruising around the courthouse square, we visited the Pontiac Oakland Auto Museum.  The backstory is that a collector of all things Pontiac thought that Pontiac, IL would be a good place for his collection.  He approached the town leadership about the idea in 2010 and the museum opened in 2011.

Pontiac started as the Pontiac Buggy Company. This is a sleigh from the 1890's. According to the information sign, it is the only one of this model known to exist.

The two oldest cars in the museum were Oaklands, made in Canada.

This is a 1916 Oakland.

1959 Tri-Power 8-cylinder engine. The Pontiac Tri-Power was introduced in 1957 and used 3 Rochester 2-bbl carbs. It became so popular that the term "Tri-Power" became synonymous for any 3 carb setup.

1978 Pontiac Phoenix hatchback with camper option. Kerry said it's not hard to see why Pontiac is no more.

We left Pontiac with 55 miles to ride and the temperature already 90 degrees with Florida-like humidity.  Fortunately, we had a good tailwind and no hills.  We were on IL-116 most of the way - it was a very nice road with very little traffic.

IL-116. A state route with very little traffic - a cyclist's delight!

We have to have old barn photos.  They make such good images.

This is an unusual color for a barn and elevator.

Riding through Cullom, we saw this plane - an  A-7 Corsair II

We didn't stop to read the sign, but a quick Internet search says was a Navy bomber used from 1967-1991.

A few miles before we got to Watseka, we were happy to find that a turn led down a very shady road along the Iroquois River.

It was a great cycling road and the shade was wonderful!

It was a good day, if a bit longer and hotter than we'd like.  We'll sleep well tonight and be ready for more fun tomorrow.

Today's ride: 57 miles (92 km)
Total: 4,671 miles (7,517 km)
