Day 120 - Monmouth to Kewanee

It was another long day, but not hard riding.  We averaged 13.1 mph thanks to tailwinds and not many hills.  We had planned to get on the road by 7AM, but had a rain delay this morning, so didn't get going until about 9AM.  It was a nice riding day after the rain moved out.

Much of today we were on quiet country roads.

The roadside views are still corn and soybeans.

We saw these pretty purple flowers on long viney stems.

Bill ShaneyfeltChicory. Edible, highly nutritious, but too bitter for me.

We didn't see any livestock today - no cows, pigs, goats, sheep or horses.

In the little town of Alexis, we saw some kind of work going on at the water tower.

Maybe someone used that same crane to get this vehicle up on the roof of this building!

This grain elevator was next to the convenience store where we stopped. Kerry had to walk over for a chat. He learned that today they were shipping corn to the ethanol plant just down the road in Galva. We later rode by the ethanol plant, but did not take a photo.

Communities founded by religious sects must have really proliferated in the mid-19th century. The marker marker described one nearby.

We stopped for a short break at Gimpy's  on 150, a local bar and grill with a big business - that is they had many very large customers!  The waitress seemed to know everyone by name.  We just had a Diet Coke and Glenda very kindly didn't charge us.

Glenda - thanks for the soda!

The small towns in this part of Illinois seem less attractive than the small towns in Iowa.

This is in Woodhull.

And this is on what seemed to be Woodhull's main street.

We were very happy to get to Kewanee about 3:30, as storms were predicted later in the afternoon.  We walked over to Walmart and bought food at the deli so we wouldn't have to go out again.  It's a staying in kind of evening.  Tomorrow's route is less than 40 miles.  It will be nice to have short day.

Today's ride: 61 miles (98 km)
Total: 4,521 miles (7,276 km)
