Day 36: New Paltz, NY to East Canaan, CT
Today was a day we've been looking forward to since we started our trip. Our friends Aline and John (Team P) met us in New Paltz last night to ride with us to East Canaan. They are strong and fast, so we saw them mostly at the rest stops, but it was fun to be with them.
Leaving New Paltz, we got on the Hudson River Trail, which is a flat, paved rail trail. In just a few miles, we came to the Walkway Over the Hudson. It's an old railroad bridge which has been transformed into a pedestrian/cyclist bridge over the Hudson River at Poughkeepsie. It was very cool.

The next part of the route took us through rural - and very hilly - areas to Amenia. We had lunch at a local deli and talked with several other customers who wanted to hear about our trip.
From Amenia to Millerton, we were on the Harlem Valley Rail Trail. It was a nice change from the hills we had just traversed. It clouded up and started to sprinkle rain, so we stopped and put on our magic rain covers. Five minutes later, the sun was out.

From Millerton, it was less than two miles to Connecticut. The state line was part way up a steep hill and Kerry said to get out the camera, but he wasn't stopping. Team P was waiting for us to get a picture together, but this is what happened:

We reached East Canaan and took a nourishment break at McDonald's before Team P left to drive back home. Thanks for riding with us today. It was great!
Tomorrow we ride a shorter, but still hilly, route to Windsor Locks, CT to spend three rest days with our friends Joan and Herb.
Today's ride: 62 miles (100 km)
Total: 1,655 miles (2,663 km)
