Day 1 Cedar Key

We rolled out of our driveway a few minutes after 9AM this morning.
It was windy, but clear and we rode north on US 19 with a tailwind. There is a long stretch on this route with no services, but we did a couple of roadside stops just to get out of the saddle and take a break. Actually, Ken and Francie needed to get off the saddle for a few minutes. With our "rolling recliner" seats, Kerry and I don't need to take the butt breaks.
We stopped at a small roadside park in Levy County which has this old train locomotive on display.

We had lunch at Hershel's Quick Stop at Otter Creek, then turned west on Rte 24 to Cedar Key. We were riding right into a 12-14 mph headwind for the next 10 miles. The rain started about then, but it was light and the wind died down when the rain came, so it was a trade off we were happy to accept! We finished our 62 mile day dry and happy, if a little tired. JS
The Gusts of wind on Rte 24 were something! Took a quick break from the wind, but in the spitting rain at this Rosewood marker...important history that most of us don't know...
Earlier in the day we crossed over the remains of the Cross Florida Barge Canal; this attempt to join the Gulf and the Atlantic was stopped in 1971.

We {Ken and Francie who have only been to FL a few times} were fascinated by Cedar Key...thousands of small islands...some joined by a causeway to the actual town. In town, the pelicans were adorable. FG
Today's ride: 62 miles (100 km)
Total: 580 miles (933 km)
