Visiting a Palace in Potsdam

After a wonderful breakfast, Karin drove us to Potsdam to explore the palaces and gardens at Sanssouci Park. It was interesting to go by car along part of the route that we had taken by bicycle. Sanssouci Park is an ensemble of palaces and gardens, which were built under Frederick the Great during the 18th century and were expanded under Frederick William IV in the 19th century. Sanssouci Palace, the summer residence of Frederick the Great, is the main focus. We had an amazing day wondering through the palace, the New Chambers, the Picture Gallery, the Chinese House and the beautiful gardens.

Sanssouci has many wonderful buildings to tour, but that is only part of it. The gardens are extensive and equally beautiful.

Mary Ellen and Karin wondering through the palace gardens. We had such a wonderful day. We feel that Sanssouci Palace ranks as one of the wonders of Europe. It offers so much that it is difficult to see everything in one day. As well, the number of visitors is limited so that you never feel crowded.
Thanks to Karin, for an extraordinary and memorable day.

The royals had a facination with all things Chinese. Built from 1754 to 1757, the Chinese House reflects this interest in Chinoiserie.

Inside the Sanssouci Palace which was completed in 1747. The design of the palace was based on the ideas of Frederick. The chest of drawers next to the fireplace is where firewood was stored

The music room. Frederick was an advocate of the arts and he loved music. Frederick played the flute and piano and composed over 100 flute concertos. Mozart and his son played here.

The New Chambers was originally built as an orangery in 1747. The orange trees were brought into this smaller palace during the winter. Frederick the Great later converted the New Chambers into a beautifully decorated guest palace
