Poznan

On our last day in Poznan we wanted to visit Cathedral Island, revisit the old market area and just wander through the streets of this wonderful city. We have loved being in Poland and look forward to coming back with our bike for a more extensive tour of the country.

We went to the train station to buy our tickets for Berlin

This is a statue of Bamberka- a woman dressed in folk costume carrying pails of water. The Bambers are German settlers who came from the Bamberg region. Between 1719-50 several hundred farming families settled in the surrounding villages. These families came to repopulate the Poznan region after the devastation of war and cholera. The Bambers helped the city and region recover its prosperity by farming the abandoned fields. A special festival is organized every year to keep the Bamber traditions alive.

Ostrow Tumski on Cathedral Island: this is one of the most important groups of monuments in Poznan. The island used to be a separate island and Poland's oldest cathedral is located here. It is here that the baptism of Poland is presumed to have taken place.

Roman Catholicism is very strong in Poland and we saw many tributes to the former Pope who was from Poland.

Palace of the Dzialyaski family was built after 1773. The building is crowned with a figure of a pelican, which refers to the rebirth of Poland
