Day 72 Little Falls NY to Schenectady NY
It was 52° when we left this morning we didn’t have to ride far before we picked up the trail. Hubs had read that it would be 78% paved and 22% cinder. We rode the paved for quite awhile before we hit the cinder. Actually the cinder today was good riding. Well packed and easy to roll. We didn’t see to many things today as the trail seemed to stay in the trees most of the way. We did go through a little tunnel and then later on we came upon some spring water flowing pretty good. Hubs went over to fill his water bottle, took a drink but said it really wasn’t that cold. At one point we did come out to this truck with 3 peacocks on it. One on the back and two on the roof of the cab. Yes, they were proud as peacocks!! As we came upon a lock on the canal, Hubs noticed two cyclists who were camping. We went over to ask about their trip and they were riding from Buffalo to Albany. They come from Quebec Canada. Their names are Phillip and Annie. We headed off and stopped in a town to try and find some muffins. There wasn’t much open so we stopped at a gas station and they had some real good muffins. So we sat and ate them there. Back on the trail again. Even though most of it was paved, there was a lot of areas where there were frost heaves or tree roots so it was Bumpity bump. Sometimes they come up so fast it you can’t slow down in time before you hit them. When we came to this one town we decided to have an early lunch so we stopped at this bakery to see if we could get something to drink and who was there? Phillip and Annie. They were enjoying some apple pie. We didn’t see any drinks we liked so off we went. When we got into Amsterdam we got off the trail to find something to drink but there didn’t seem to be anything around. It looked like a real blue collar town. There were tons of two and three family homes. We saw a woman and asked about a convenience store and she there was one up the hill. Nope we are not going up the hill! We rode around and saw a few restaurants but they are all closed on Mondays. ☹️. We did come to a hot dog place so we were able to get drinks and eat our sandwiches on the bench outside. Back on the trail we went. We were probably about 8 or 9 miles from our destination when it began to rain. Darn, I thought we would of made it before the rain as they said it was supposed to start at 3 and it came around 2. We were getting close to our motel when I heard “on your left” and it was Phillip and Annie again. Phillip was riding without a shirt. I guess it was easier to take off his shirt than put on his rain gear. 🙂. They went off to the left and we went to the right. We got to the motel and we were soaked. Just standing at the registration desk we left puddles from our rain pants as we took off our jackets before we went in. After we showered and waited for the rain to stop we finally walked to dinner. Couldn’t believe it when we walked in as there were Phillip and Annie. So we sat next to them and chatted away. They were camping and I felt bad that they would be setting up their tent in the wet. That is not fun. They will be ending their trip in Albany tomorrow. From there they will drive into NYC. After that Annie will drive back to Quebec and Phillip will ride his bike back. Safe travels for both of them and who knows
