Stage Five: Southern Burgundy (Tour de Bourgogne) 150 km
Last year we stumbled through the Cote d'Or region of northern Burgundy. That is where the Pinot Noir is king and you have all the hyper expensive wines. But in this stage we are in southern Burgundy, the section known as Saone et Loire. This is the home of the Gamay grape, which is also red. I read that Gamay is light bodied and acidic, which would be more meaningful if we actually drank the stuff!

Another big thing in this stage is Cluny, the site of one of the biggest and most powerful of the medieval Benedictine monastic orders of Europe. Some form of the Cluny abbey has been there for 1000 years, but it was mainly destroyed after the French Revolution. Today there are remnants that have been preserved and where archeological digs and restorations are ongoing.
