Mar 8, 2025 - Tavira to Faro

Back to get the Crow

 Tavira to Faro, Hostellicious $64

I FELT some regret that I had chosen to take a morning train rather than a later one. I could easily have explored here some more. To that end, I was up early and out exploring as soon as it was light out - in a manner of speaking, that is. It was cloudy and there were a few showers but that did not stop the mail. Er, I meant it didn't stop me.

I crossed the old arched bridge and wandered to and fro, discovering pretty back streets, a nice square and a beautiful cat perched on a scooter like he owned it. Probably did. Cats own the world What I did not find was a cafe for a galao and croissant. Giving up on that, i eventually returned to my room to pick up my belongings and headed back toward the train station. Substantial rain was in the forecast so if I could get to the station before it got serious, that would be a good thing.

Something I had not noticed yesterday was that just past the station was a Lidl supermarket and it was calling my name. I headed over for a few mandarins, a pear and a pair of doughy croissants - this would fit the bill for today's breakfast. I got back to the station just as rain was resuming and settled into my bench to eat. Then the Maple Leaves seemed to gather. A young girl (Montreal) and a couple (Ottawa) were also waiting for the train so we got to chatting about you-know-who then moved on to comparing travel notes.

The train arrived right on time at 1135 am and zipped back to Faro as quickly as that. The young Montrealer wasn't sure about where the bus station was, so I did my good deed of the day and helped her find it. Then it was time to wander the back streets a bit more though it was getting a lot cooler, windier and raining on and off. I returned to my hostel from two nights ago, where I found the Crow safe and sound and ready to return to Lisbon tomorrow. I was unable to get the room with a private bathroom so it was shared. They were nice and clean and not busy but this is the first trip that I am really liking my own room with my own space. Not sure if it is because of the dark gloom for goings-on but at night I don't want anyone around.

I suddenly remembered that there was no breakfast in the morning so I zipped down the street to the supermarket for fruit and croissants then returned right away. It was really cold and really windy out.

Not much of a day but still pleasant enough. Tomorrow morning is a fairly early train ride to Lisbon and the packing up of the bike. Can you believe it is already that time? I just got here. Though I am anxious to see family, I also have a fear of a more head-on in-your-face insanity of the Banana Republic's antics and its threats to us.

His majesty just sat and watched me as I walked by and merely 'accepted' a few scritches on the head. -- Tavira, Portugal
