Mar 11, 2025 - LIS to YUL to YYZ to YTS
The whirlwind day
lis to yul AC813, yul to yyz AC895, yyz to yts AC8435
ALWAYS a lot going on but all kinds of hurrying up to sit and wait. Until the train or plane or whatever does whatever it needs to do or wherever it needs to get.
Though my alarm was set, I hardly slept all night, so around 545 am I just figured I might as well just get up, so I showered, finished packing then lugged my gear out to the entrance. As luck would have it, the overnight staff was just setting out the breakfast around 6 am since they know some people have to get up early to get somewhere... like an airport. So I was able to have a galao and some breakfast, which I had not been expecting. The other nice thing was that initially when I came out it was pouring outside - not good for a cardboard box. But by the time I had finished eating the rain had slowed to almost none, though not quite.
The metro stop was exactly straight across the street from the guest house. I carried the box and gear across then rolled to the entrance. I DID have to carry the box and heavy duffel and carry-on down about twenty or thirty steps, but then I was in on smooth granite so I could roll the box to the turnstiles and through the special luggage one which fit the box and gear much better.
There were two long escalators down to track level and as I was getting to the platform, the train was just pulling into the station. Since it was so early there was all kinds of room on the train so I backed up to the wall to be out of the way and soon the metro zipped me the ten stops from Saldanha to Aeroporto. Wow, fast.
In the airport I got a cart and now moving about was way easier without having to lug the duffel while manoeuvring the box. The Air Canada check-ins were open so I handed over the duffel to one and rolled the bike over to the special belt and was free of the bigggies until Timmins.
Not exciting, but nice, I headed to the ANA Lounge and just relaxed and read until it was time to head to my gate. Passing through outgoing customs control was a breeze, as was boarding the plane. Once boarded, I looked up to sese a flight attendant chatting with the person in front of me. He looked somewhat familiar, and when I saw the name tag I realized that it was MA's cousin Zach - this is the first time that we have been on the same flight. Then even more surprisingly, on the flight from Montreal to Toronto he was in the seat beside me - he was done work and now returning to his Toronto base. How is that for a coincidence?
Currently sitting in the Air Canada Cafe at Toronto Pearson YYZ awaiting my final flight to Timmins YTS which is currently half an hour late. It will be a long evening because then there's that drive from Timmins to Cochrane!
