Day 11 - April 22 - Tupelo, MS Rest Day

Touring Tupelo

Ed’s Story

Today was a rest day. No biking. Slept in. Oatmeal and brewed coffee for breakfast.

Ran around for the following:

  • Visit other  brother, Mike
  • Visit Elvis Presley birthplace
  • Visit Veterans Memorial Park and see Vietnam Memorial
  • Visit nephew Matthew’s bike shop
  • Grocery shopping for family dinner

My front fender broke yesterday so I fixed it while cleaning and lubing drivetrain, and performed bolt tightening.

Removing Christmas lights at our little brother’s house.

There is a large museum here. We did not go through due to time constraints. My wife’s aunt used to volunteer here.

If it had a attached garage, I might make a bid on it. It would be expensive to move to Fremont though.

A great Vietnam veteran memorial here in Tupelo. They have a replica of the Vietnam memorial here as you can see in the background.

Family gathered at my brothers house for a great meal, beer, and conversation.

Tomorrow’s ride is about 64 miles to Holly Springs where we are staying with my wife Debbie’s cousin Jean‘s house.

Until tomorrow, happy biking!

John’s Story

Important acquisition this morning. Replacement for my trashed bicycle GPS. If you’re in Tupelo, go to Trails and Treads.

Smallest National Battlefield I’ve ever visited, just the size of a large corner lot. I guess the city of Tupelo just grew over the area of the battle.

Just two cannons, a monument and a few gravestones.

I don’t think I’ve seen such a healthy poison ivy plant. The vine is gowing 30’-40’ up into the tree.

Bill ShaneyfeltSome PI vines around here are over an inch and a half in diameter and reach far into the tree... Not gonna climb up to see how far though! But I don't hesitate to pull out my little folding saw and make it start all over again. Years ago in KY, I measured a leaf that was over 18 inches for a single leaflet of the 3. Never seen any as big since though.

Bill, you didn’t ID any of the Lilliputian flowers the other day. This may be one of the same, but even smaller.

Hornet and dandelion composition.

Bill ShaneyfeltActually a hoverfly (flower fly). There are many species of them that mimic various wasps or bees. This looks like a good match with photos of black-shouldered drone fly.

The remains of a mushroom, probably a casualty of the battle.

Short journal today. Spent the day shopping, maintaining bikes, cooking, eating, drinking and visiting.

Expecting a cold morning tomorrow for the resumption of our ride. Lows in the upper 30s but warming to the 70s, with a crosswind to quartering tailwind. Stay tuned.
