Day 3 Weilheim to Gauting - A Winter Tour - 2025 - CycleBlaze

Day 3 Weilheim to Gauting

When I wake up in the morning I have a cough and am feeling tired. The sun isn't out and it won't be as warm as yesterday, either. Looks to me like a dreary day lies ahead. I am just wishing I were home. I tell Janos I think I'll just ride the 17 km to the nearest train station in Tutzing. It is the same line that goes through Gauting, very practical.

After the good breakfast served at our hotel I'm feeling better and change my mind, I want to ride home. I'm not feeling that bad. Gotta love German breakfasts! Probably waiting for the train and getting on and off with a loaded e-bike wouldn't be much easier than pedaling the whole distance in the long run. This is a good decision. The route today is the nicest of all the three days and I enjoy it.

Grey skies when we saddle up and are ready to go.

We take a quick look at Weilheim's Marienplatz before we leave town.

A small pile of snow remains, and the trees are bare. It will look more cheerful with some sun and people seated in the outdoor cafes.

I like this portrayal of the young carpenter with moustache sitting on a workbench with his tools of the trade and in front of him a cradle he made. His clothes are traditional, the hat with a feather, scarf, apron, lederhosen, calf warmers (wadenwärmer) and haferl shoes.

We have a flat ride through farming countryside to Fischen just south of Ammersee.

A very old wayside cross on the edge of a field

There aren't just sheep and cows here.

As much as I prefer summer, I do love the trees' bare branches.

Trees in winter are a treat.

The only significant climb today starts in Fischen and seven km later the work for the day is done. Along the way an interesting fence catches my attention. Each fence slat has a skilfully carved tip. I didn't count but the fence must have had at least 100 slats.

A work of love

We are now getting closer to home and riding roads that we have been on frequently. But there is always something new to discover, for example, a prison. From the distance I assume the buildings are a monastery or perhaps a chapel and farm buildings. We have passed by here before, but I never bothered to identify the buildings. According to Wikipedia, Prison Rothenfeld offers a work therapy program and has a capacity of 12 inmates.

Celebrity chef Alfons Schuhbeck is now serving his prison sentence, like Uli Hoeneß once did, in the correctional facility in Rothenfeld , a very special prison that forces its inmates to work in agriculture. (Süddeutsche Zeitung, February 8, 2024)

Yes, it is a very special prison!

We ride through Starnberg, a stone's through from home now. We are still taking care to avoid forest paths (mud) and stay on asphalt and have just one more hill, not to be taken seriously because we have ridden it so often.

In Starnberg we see some murals on a container.

We are home around one. The tour wasn't perfect, but we are still happy that we made the effort. Only a day or two later, Janos is looking at the weather forecast for the coming weeks. That was before he came down with the same bug that I had. We are both looking forward to warmer days and better health for a similar ride, though. I have even worked out improved routes.

We made it.

Steve Miller/GrampiesA nice little tour, but maybe just a wee bit too early. One more month and the weather would probably have been better, or at least warmer.

Suzanne GibsonTo Janice BranhamThanks, Janice! On this tour, and on almost all tours, l had my mirrorless Sony Nex 6 with me, the lens is a Tamron 18-200mm. It fits comfortably in a small handlebar bag. The Nex 6 is an older model and with its smaller sensor doesn't do too well in low light, but I love it for travel. There's a picture of it on this page. https://www.cycleblaze.com/journals/october24/markt-indersdorf-to-pfaffenhofen/#56187_fr7441z4ubl0e1s6cihd9tukze2

I also process all my pictures before posting them. It makes a difference, especially when you can't count on good light when traveling.

Janice BranhamTo Suzanne GibsonOoh-wee that's a big lens. I have a habit of shooting from the saddle with the phone camera, then using Google's photo editing options to fix them up. I suppose that's processing for dummies. Clearly you know what you're doing. Congrats on powering through your wintry tour.
