Shishikui to Nahari: First time stealth camping
We had a late start this morning because we lay in bed and did some work while we had a convenient internet connection. Today is the first sunny day we have had since arriving in Japan so we really should have been on the road earlier to make the most of the conditions. We finally gor going some time after nine o’clock and started gently down some stunning coastline towards Cape Muroto.

After about fifteen kilometers we passed three cycle tourists coming in the opposite direction, and American guy with American and Aussie lassies. At a stop at a colddrink vending machine at about twenty eight kilometers two guys (Irish and French) caught up to us. They had already done a hundred kilometers in the day and were pushing on to meet their WarmShowers host. Up until then they had been mostly sleeping rough (under the bridges with the homeless locals according the Irish guy). We met them again at one of the many beautiful rocky outcrops along the coast and had a good natter.
We were also planning to camp rough today – the first time we are doing so. We hadn’t really planned to cycle too far today but by the time it was late enough to look for a spot for the night we had already reach Nahari. We checked out the local Michi no Eki and everything looked OK for a clean up and some grub, so we scouted around until we found a quiet park cum playground about a kilometer away. Then it was back to the Michi no Eki for a good scrub (I even washed my hair) in the disabled toilet, a couple of beers and some sushi, potstickers and rice from the Lawsons konbini next to the Michi no Eki. There was a Henro at the Michi no Eki with whom we had a good chat. He didn’t look much older than his thirties but had already visited eighty countries including thirty six in Africa alone ! He was simply going to sleep on a bench at the Michi no Eki.
As it got dark, we made our way to the little park and setup the tent, feeling quite chuffed with ourselves.
Today's ride: 79 km (49 miles)
Total: 451 km (280 miles)
