Rest day in Astoria
After waking up feeling slightly below par - oops, did I have one too many last night - I went in search of some breakfast and then some fresh air. After a couple of hours in the Columbia River Maritime Museum, which is well worth a visit if the sea is what floats your boat, I took a walk to pier 39 where I first heard and then saw loads of sea lions sunbathing and frolicking on the pontoons. Very entertaining indeed. They can be viewed at

I had noticed earlier that The Wet Dog cafe has some jazz playing this afternoon, which is where I am now sat with a beer listening to a great 6 piece group who have a tuba in their line-up (very much appreciated by a fellow tuba player), failing to concentrate on the journal.
Astoria is a fairly small city (but a relatively large one in this area) with a population of only about 9,000, but has been a great place to spend some time. There's lots to see and do, and the locals are extremely friendly. Well worth a visit if passing through.
