Fun Types

A rating of how much fun it is to ride your bike.

Type 1 Fun: days that are fun at the time you’re experiencing them.

Type 1.5 Fun: days that are not fun at the time, but that a part of you can still see the humor in the ridiculousness or absurdity of your situation.

Type 2 Fun: days that are not fun at the time, but in time you come to see the humor in them in retrospect and that often become some of the best memories of your travel experiences.

Type 3 Fun: days that were not fun at the time, and years later you’re still waiting.

Gregory GarceauI'll be most interested in the development of this chapter. FUN is my #1 rule for bike touring. It might be my only rule. Too many rules make Greg a very dull boy.

Keith AdamsType 4 fun involves search and rescue, ambulances, and/or medevac flights. You do NOT want Type 4 fun, ever. You don't even really want to be party to someone else's Type 4 fun if you have an alternative.

Scott AndersonTo Keith AdamsYou sound experienced! I wondered if there wasn't a Type 4. If I'd known, I'd have classified last December that way. Definitely an experience not to be repeated.

Keith AdamsWe were first on the scene of an incident where an obese (380+ pounds, by her own reckoning) woman hiking with her dog on the Appalachian Trail took a bad step and snapped her ankle. We were in Shenandoah National Park so there were rangers and other resources available but they didn't begin to reach the scene for 45 minutes or more after we called 911.

They had to call for a medevac chopper in the end; even withe the 20 or so responders on hand, and the litter they brought, there was no way they could have carried her down.

Rachael AndersonTo Keith AdamsHow awful! I better keep my weight down so I’m easier to evacuate. Also, I’m very careful what trails I hike. I’ve also resorted to sliding on my butif it’s too steep going down.
