Wondering Where the Lions Are - A Short Savannah Sojourn - CycleBlaze

Wondering Where the Lions Are

I  began cycle touring in earnest about 15 years ago and while my touring history is shorter history than many here on Cycle Blaze, I have packed countless wonderful experiences into a relatively compressed time period. As I’ve moved into my seventies, I find myself continuously seeking new challenges and opportunities, trying to cram in a lifetime of touring  while I still possess that magical “trifecta of time, money, and health” – a stage of life succinctly captured by Jacquie Gaudet and eloquently described by Mark Bingham in his most recent journal.

When an email from my trusted touring company showed up in my inbox last fall, it aroused sufficient curiosity to cause me pause, saving it from a quick, unread trip to the trash can. The message announced a new tour, an eight day excursion in Tanzania cycling from the base of Mount Kilimanjaro to the Ngorongoro Crater. Five days cycling across 323 kilometers of northern Tanzania, with an additional two full-day jeep safaris.  How could I resist!!!

I leave in a week, well vaccinated against the pesky microbes but a bit worried about lurking lions.

Bob KoreisI've been told at Denali they refer to cyclists as meals on wheels. I wonder if the same or similar is used for the land of the lions?

Mike AylingReminds me of the old now no longer PC poster advertising a brand of bicycle showing an African man on the bike managing to keep ahead of a lion!

Mark BinghamI think you're fearless, and the lions should be wary.

Rachael AndersonYou definitely have packed in a lot of cycling in a short time. I’m going to start calling you Wonder Woman! I can’t wait to read about your trip and to get together in Annecy.

Susan CarpenterTo Bob KoreisThanks Bob for your comforting thoughts ;) - I'll let you know if I hear of a similar saying but sadly won't be around if I experience it literally.

Scott AndersonTo Susan CarpenterActually, the original came out in 1939, sung in Zulu by rhe aurhor, Solomon Linda. As glorious and thrilling as the Tokens version is, the story of Linda and the pittance he received in royalties is tragic. I’ll send you a pic and article if you want to include it for context.

Steve Miller/GrampiesHey Susan, don't forget the very apt Canadian saying-when in a group being chased by a bear (substitute lion here) you don't need to be faster than the bear (substitute lion again), you just need to be faster than the last person in the group. Pedal hard!
