Petroglyphs, petroglyphs, and more petroglyphs
In Albuquerque NM today we did a hike in Petroglyph National Monument Park. https://www.nps.gov/petr/index.htm
In a 1.5 mile walk we saw hundreds of the thousands of petroglyphs in the section we walked. We explored the Piedras Marcadas Canyon one of the three places to see petroglyphs in the park. Petroglyphs are carvings that are scratched into basalt volcanic rock by many different ancient pueblos as long as 700 years ago, a very special place for them.
A couple of recommendations, If you go to visit the petroglyphs wear polarized sunglasses it really makes the petroglyphs pop and much easier to find. We were sharing sunglasses back and forth….. If photographing, a telephoto lens and a polarized filter would be really helpful. We were there in the afternoon and it was sweltering, the morning would be better.
It was hot, 93 degrees, very windy and sandy. Like walking in soft sand at the beach. We saw a sand storm whip up and it turned into a sand funnel cloud.
We headed to Old Town Albuquerque around dinner time, explored a few shops as they were closing and soaked in some of the old town feel before settling down to a dinner of barbecue.
