We do this every morning and several times a day…. Do you know what this is?? It’s for filling your water bottle or camel back, an ingenious contraption!
We have learned a lot about the history of the Erie Canal on this trip. The reason that the Erie Canal was successful was that there was a way to get through the mountains. The Mohawk River cut its way through the rock and formed a water route west. The canal took advantage of this cut. Where the river cut through looks like two noses of land sticking into the water, little nose and big nose.
The aqueduct in the distance is from the enlarged Erie Canal, the second Erie Canal and the tree line beyond the aqueduct is on the north shore of the current Erie Canal, the third Erie Canal.
Along the Mohawk River where it is combined with the Erie Canal there are several of these water control structures that maintain the river level as needed for the canal to function
The fire department in Pattonville sold hot dogs and hamburgers as well as ice cream sundaes as a fund raiser. They also provided space for our afternoon rest stop.
Mary Kay FalconerThe number of tents still amazes me. The migration of an entire community by bike. I guess all of the tents and bags fit in the 3 Penske trucks. I'm guessing some carried their own tents and bags on bikes but don't know for sure. I wonder how many have biked this trip more than once. Reply to this comment 2 years ago
Jane FletcherTo Mary Kay FalconerYes, all of the gear fit in the Penske trucks. Pretty much everyone had all their gear on the trucks. We only saw 2 or 3 that carried gear on their bikes. I think it was 25% of the riders had ridden this tour more than once. The support was a really well oiled machine that worked well. They have done it enough times to get it all down pat! They were great! Reply to this comment 2 years ago
