Day 6 - Rome to Canajoharie

Day 6 - off for a long ride today 60+ miles with what is reputed to be a huge hill at the end…. Lots of canal, the Mohawk River, locks, boats passing through, cliffs, rolling farm land, more paved trail than stone dust, a fair amount of shade, one oops in the gps file and a really enjoyable ride. And…. A big hill at the end….

The rest stops have a wide variety of sweet, salty, and fruity foods

A few miles on roads today but not a lot

Mid morning snack at a local bakery. The pastries were great!

Following the trail signs for the Erie Canal Way Trail and the Empire State Trail.

One of the reasons the Erie Canal was feasible was that it used the cut through the mountains made by the Mohawk River.

Historic Fort Herkirmer Stone Church first organized in 1725 and built in 1767

All along the canal we see these guillotines. They are used to close of a section of the can in an emergency or when they need to drain a section to perform maintenance

Hmmm…. Not sure if this boat would float but it’s pretty unique…

Entering Canajoharie and getting ready to go up the big hill…

From the top of the second section of the hill. It goes up in three sections. It’s about a mile long and the grade is about 11% with flattish spots between the three sections.
