Castles, castles and more castles

Along the Rhein river

We woke this morning on the train in time to gather our luggage, walk to the car that had our bikes, take our bikes down from where they were hanging, and be ready to jump off the train when it stopped briefly in Mainz. Arrival in Mainz right on time at 6:02 am.

We fixed the flat in the train station. One of the patches on one of the well used bikes had failed and was leaking air. We replaced the tube and were on our way.

Today was a national holiday in Germany, ascension day,  we had free reign of the streets with virtually no traffic as we made our way across the city to the Rhine River.

After we had gone a ways  another of our very used bikes had a flat! Were were just ready to get on the ferry to cross the river. So, we crossed the river had lunch in a Biergarten and then dealt with the flat. Because we had just used our only tube we had to patch this tube in order to get going again. We were extremely fortunate that a German man and his wife saw our difficulty and came over to help. He found the pin hole size hole quickly and patched the tire for us. Then we were on our way again.

This next stretch of the Rhine held many many castles some in ruins and others not.

This castle was on an island in the middle of the Rhein and was used to levy tolls on passing ships long ago.

The last castle we saw as we were riding along the river was our hotel for the night. Of course the castle sits high above the river on a rocky promontory and the only way to get to it is on a winding uphill road climbing to the top. It was a long climb both on bike and on foot! Splurge night, the castle was amazing, it was first noted in history around 1,000. We thoroughly enjoyed wandering around the castle and the fabulous dinner that was included in the cost of the room.

Meg BatesSounds like a great day. Appreciated y’all texting some pics. Know it was hard to post them with your Internet situation. From what I could see on the Weather site and where I understand you will be going appears you may have some good weather ahead. 😄

Will be anxious to hear more details about your Ride up to the castle!

Hope your last four days of riding are flat and fabulous. Ride up to the castle!
