Kloten (Zurich Airport)

A Relaxed But Productive Day

This will be a short entry as we have had a very relaxed day. We slept in and then ate one last hotel breakfast. Tomorrow we plan to eat at the airport. Once we had had our fill of cappuccinos we returned to the room to contemplate the decor…drying clothing. Most things were completely dry and the hotel hairdryer took care of the rest.

This was last night just after arrival. What a mess. Keith’s jacket is hanging on the open cupboard door because we ran out of hangers in the closet. We didn’t want to close the closet because we needed air circulation for our dripping stuff. We had socks and gloves and everything else hanging anywhere we could.

We had talked briefly of doing an unloaded loop to Winterthur today, but that was before arriving very soggy yesterday and contemplating today’s weather. It has been a grey, grey day, so it certainly wasn’t motivating. Instead we packed the bikes and sorted our gear. We put one pannier in the bike boxes and use one as a carry on. We both use an ultra light backpack as our personal item and it gives us lots of capacity.

These boxes are very sturdy. They have made four round trips to Europe.

That job done we went out for a late lunch. A bowl of pumpkin soup hit the spot. We had a bit of a walk and went back to the hotel and I hit a snag with online check in. We fly Edelweiss from here to Vancouver, then Air Canada to Victoria. I booked through Air Canada, but when I tried to check in on the app I got a message that I had to check in with Edelweiss. When I tried to do that I repeatedly got a message that we didn’t exist on the flight. We weren’t concerned, but as we are only 2 km from the airport we walked over. Our primary purpose was avoiding the check in line tomorrow morning. Boom. The Swiss Air attendant assured me we did exist, printed boarding passes, answered all my questions and was just fabulous. We were sorted. All we have to do tomorrow is go to bag drop, get the boxes weighed and then trundle them to over sized baggage. Easy peasy!  We have a cab booked. Incidentally, Edelweiss was terrific on the outbound flight and they don’t charge extra for bicycles which is a bonus.

So now we are relaxing in the room. I had a very mild cold last week, and we were so hopeful I wouldn’t share, but I did. Just as I returned to firing on all cylinders Keith came down with it. He is having mild symptoms as well but it is still lousy timing. It is the first cold either of us has had in over five years. That seems astonishing but it’s true.

On a very bright note, the room looks much better without our stuff everywhere!

We went out for pizza tonight at a spot recommended by the hotel when we were here in September. It was delicious and came with cherries the menu said. A bit unusual we thought. Of course it wasn’t cherries, it was fresh hot chilies, and when we saw it on the menu again tonight we had a giggle.

We finished off our last evening in Europe this way. Why not?

Pierre EhingerHello Kathleen and Keith 🤗
Once again you did well 👏👏.
What a fantastic trip, awesome journal and pictures.
I loved your last days in Swisserland.
Hope you flight back to Victoria will be fine.
By my side, I finally had the hernia surgery on Wednesday... you remember, that was the origin of all that "mess" 😂😂.
Everything is OK now and the future is shining again ( La Réunion island, Victoria 😋😋).
We stay connected.
All the best to you 🤞🤞
Pierre

Karen PoretMust be the “new thing” to get a cold at the end of a cycling trip! Perhaps the body knows it’s no longer on “cycle time” so the adrenaline does not kick in. I had my first cold in over 5 years as well. Changing airplanes and airport 3x within 24 hours didn’t help much.
However, I have lost hearing in my right ear and do hope it will “open up” before too long. Old age ailments aren’t for cyclists —we just pedal along.
