Les Eyzies to Sarlat
Over the hill and down to the valley .
The morning mist is burning off as we leave Les Eyzies, and we’re clearly in for a warm day. From the turn off to Meyrals the D48 road starts a gradual ascent. It’s hardly a gut buster but it asks a couple of questions. And the countryside is definitely, here’s that word- bucolic. Houses are all built in that same honey coloured stone you see in the Cotswolds villages. Clearly anyone wishing to remodel their home in pastel pink is not welcome.

Meyrals comes up fairly quickly and we stop for a breather. There’s a wonderful boulangerie selling chausseur aux pommes of the lightest flakiest pastry, so we indulge. There’s also a small, old church with a bell gable. It’s interior is beautifully simple, mostly.

From Meyrals the route continues up and down on a bit of a plateau until we reach the final climb. Then it’s downhill into Sarlat.
We lunch in a park for a couple of hours before heading to our accommodation. There are a number of languages to be heard apart from French here and there seem to be numbers of English speaking tourists abroad.
Our apartment is easy to find since it’s a beautiful stone building right opposite the tourist office. We’ve been told that we can leave our bikes in the lobby downstairs. There’s just enough space in one corner so we squeeze them in, lock them and throw our plastic security blanket over them. Upstairs we are pleased to find spacious rooms and a room with a view.
Today's ride: 25 km (16 miles)
Total: 1,214 km (754 miles)
