to Roper Lake then to Globe 3 and 4 Apr - Stan's Excellent Cross Country Ride 2025 - CycleBlaze

April 3, 2025 to April 4, 2025

to Roper Lake then to Globe 3 and 4 Apr

It was another cold morning in Lordsburg.  It warmed up pretty quickly and we were taking off clothes by the time we got to Arizona.  We are on Mountain Standard Time here which is the same as Pacific Daylight time.  The roads were pretty decent and not much traffic most of the time. I left JC and PB behind and Ef was there at the van with his son.  I joined them and we had a pretty good pace to Roper Lake.  The ride was ok, nice scenery but on US 70.  There was quite a bit of ascent, but much more descent. Yay!

Bird Talk There was a lake at Roper Lake State Park, no surprise. Lot of birds around, including my best looks at Gr Roadrunner, as they hung around campsites looking for food.  There were around 80 Yellow Headed Blackbirds. I had probably only seen a dozen in  my life before.  Also seen Violet Green Swallows, PB Grebes, Am Coot , AW Pelican, Lucy's Warbler, and others can't remember.

It now gets dark at around 7 PM. No internet at the campground and I hate to do this on my phone.

ON the 4th, I started with EF and his son. There was a fair bit of headwind right from the start.  we started on some back roads in Safford, but got back on US 70 quickly.  This section of 70 was much busier and the shoulder mostly was bad.  There was 3000 ft of ascent and less descent.  The combination of headwinds, long mileage, and ascent and bad road made this a terrible day.  We got to the campground just as heavier rain hit, but others got wet.  There was also lightning and thunder which the leaders advise against riding in those conditions.

I had stayed at this campground 10 years ago, but it is not suitable for anyone and especially a group of 11, as there is one porta potty, no showers and no sinks. There is a second location 1/2 a mile away with more amenities. not convenient for us. I don't think tenting is allowed at the other site.

a few of us went to a coffee shop to get out of the rain, as there was no place at the campground.  The leaders wisely decided to book us in at the Motel 6.

This would have been much worse if we were at the campground with one portapotty.  EF treated us to dinner at a restaurant while his son was with us.

What with rescuing riders in the rain and moving to the Motel 6 and dinner at a restaurant it is now 9:45.

I'm not sure if there will be an entry tomorrow.

Today's ride: 165 miles (266 km)
Total: 2,611 miles (4,202 km)
