to Marfa 23 March - Stan's Excellent Cross Country Ride 2025 - CycleBlaze

to Marfa 23 March

Cold last night, but not as cold. Breakfast outside in the dark.

We started riding in the chill. Then about half an hour in, we went through a front and the temperature went up and the winds came up.  Later the winds died down a bit and we cruised into Alpine.  Several got food at Penny's Diner and mostly couldn't finish the huge amounts they were served.

JC and I got separated from Pat and chased him for most of an hour up to Paisano Pass where two other riders were. The five of us rode into Marfa together. The head winds came up again from the Pass to town.

Two other riders who completed a cross country tour with Adventure Cycling years ago joined us a few night ago in Sanderson and have ridden to Marfa with us. Hal lives somewhere near here and they will head there tomorrow.

For about twenty miles after Alpine TX, there was a foot wide bit of smooth shoulder which could be challenging to ride.  Otherwise, the chip seal is so rough and hard on the body; it is miserable.  Other times, as I mentioned, we are in the traffic lane, but there were bits today where the vehicle lane was terrible too.

We are at EL Cosmico RV Park which is quite eclectic.

At a pop-up restaurant with no name. Good food

MARGARET SMITHStan, I've been following you across. I'm assumong you're past the cold mornings and cold hands but I am bringing a pair of gloves for you in September that don't fit me. They're yours if they fit. They're neon yellow so visible!
Stay safe!
