To Ft Hancock 26
We were happy to leave our dusty campground behind. There was some cloud cover and that meant that the temp was in the 50’s. Everyone was able to get through breakfast and packing up much more quickly.
As planned, we were on I-10 early on. There was a great tailwind and smooth pavement and another great day of cycling. I chose to join EF and WW at a faster pace than when I go with my usual group. There was a long section on a frontage road. I think less than half was on interstate.
The route was uphill at first then down into a bowl where we met the vehicle. Then up a bit out of the bowl and a long downhill along the shoulder of the I. We stopped at a truck stop when we left the I. The rear light fell off my bike when I went over a cattle guard. Fortunately, one of the later riders found it and picked it up. The last section was on TX 20 and we were able to get to 30 MPH with the tailwind and good surface.
The three of us had lunch at a restaurant in Ft Hancock and then over to the church. All of these towns are dry and dusty and seem to be dying. We were near the border and 8 of the group went over to see the big beautiful wall. Border Patrol let them step over the line and back.
Bird Talk: Greater Roadrunner finally at mile 56 or so. I thought I saw Phainopeplas but wasn’t sure. Later I looked out and a huge number of them were in the field next to the church, maybe 100.
I had ridden on interstates last time I covered a similar route to this, but it is an unusual thing for a midwesterner.
Several people had flats today as we are now clearly in thorn country.
Today's ride: 77 miles (124 km)
Total: 2,153 miles (3,465 km)
