A tribal lands statement, or land acknowledgement, is a "formal statement that recognizes and respects Indigenous Peoples as traditional stewards of this land and the enduring relationship that exists between Indigenous Peoples and their traditional territories." Given the history of colonialism and ongoing ramifications of centuries of oppression against Indigenous Peoples in Southern California, I feel it is important to recognize who they are. The Stagecoach 400 route traverses across Kumeyaay, Cocopah, and Cupeno lands. I would like to thank the indigenous inhabitants along the route for their enduring care and protection of these lands.
