LODGING
Ajo, AZ - Marine Motel. 520-387-7626. king bed $60. Clean carpet. HBO. wi-fi. Vintage furniture and bathroom. The bathroom has a rusty tub and pulling up linoleum. We've seen worse.
The owner made a face when I asked if we could leave our van here. He said yes, at our own risk. That just underlined our unease at the rough town. Gulp.
Sonoyta, Sonora - San Antonio Motel. 01 651 512 1549. $400. pesos. ($20. USD) Small room. Smelled strongly of bleach. Clean. Very basic. But it did have American football on TV and passable wi-fi. Certainly very nice for the price.
Puerto Penasco, Sonora - El Senorial Motel. 01 81 8191 9101. $590 pesos mid week price. Two beds. weak wi-fi. flat screen TV. About three blocks from the beach. Clean. A step up from last night. There's a pool.
Sonoyta, Sonora - Hotel Excelsior. 01 651 512 1041. $625 pesos. It was $50 pesos extra for a second bed. It's a bigger, nicer room than at the San Antonio we stayed at our first time through. Both were very clean.
Tucson, AZ - 2021 edit - we now stay at the Hampton Inn Airport as the Quality Inn has unfortunately come upon hard times. Quality Inn Airport. 520-294-2500 AARP rate $63. better than average breakfast, including sausage and cooked eggs (the microwave sort) plus the usual continental breakfast items. The location was convenient for exiting town. E. Valencia is a very big, busy street with a bike lane. We had no issues riding on it.
Sonoita, AZ- Sonoita Inn. 520-455-5935 single queen $119. Very nice, upscale B&B. wine with cheese and crackers in the afternoon. Continetal breakfast. There is one other place in Sonita, Xanadu Ranch - it is a few blocks away on a street with several business that you wouldn't know is there unless you decide to bicycle Elgin Road.
Tombstone, AZ - Tombstone Motel. 520-457-3478 $62.95, one bed. Large motel, centrally located. No breakfast. Our room was run down. It was clean (my main criteria), but there are many choices in Tombstone. I liked Katie's Cabins, but they were sold out for our date.
Bisbee, AZ - Jonquil Motel. 520-432-7371. One bed $73.48 total. No breakfast. Very cute, small restored motel. It seemed most lodging in Bisbee was upstairs, not desirable for me with bicycles. Mozart Garden Suite looks like a nice stay.
Sierra Vista, AZ - Rodeway Inn. 520-335-2198. AARP rate $54. continental breakfast. Conveniently located for entry/exit, especially if you are riding through Fort Huachuca. Surrounding businesses had bars on windows and some people on the street looked sketchy. We didn't go out after dark.
Patagonia, AZ - Stage Stop Inn. 520-394-2211. Single queen $122.73. No breakfast, but they have an attached restaurant. Very nice rooms situated around a courtyard with a pool and tables to hang out and chat.
Amado, AZ - Amado Territory Inn. 520-398-8684. king bed, $137.51 full made to order breakfast. This was a wonderful place to spend our last night. The Inn has lovely grounds with a delightful cactus garden. I enjoyed sitting outside until dark, soaking in the last few moments of Arizona sunshine before heading back to cold Colorado. In this area there are a number of small towns, each with one place to stay. There are choices. The least expensive choices would be to stay in Nogales. I felt the Amado Inn was a worthwhile splurge.
FOOD
Tucson - Quality Inn hot breakfast - includes prefab eggs and meat. Nothing too exciting right next to the lodging - fast food - Wendys, subway, burger king, etc. No real restaurants. I have a note to eat at Brooklynn Burgers. Surely there’s something good close to us? Or even not close. We can ask Tom for suggestions.
Sonoita - free wine and appetizers after 5 PM (I didn’t ask what). One restaurant: The Steak Out. http://www.azsteakout.com/index.html I don’t see a menu. breakfast is included - oatmeal/bagel/english muffin/yogurt included
Tombstone - no breakfast included. Big Nose Kate’s Saloon http://bignosekates.info/files/BNK%20Menu%202017.pdf is around the corner and seems to be ‘the’ place to eat. Several Mexican or steak places nearby.
Bisbee - no breakfast. My notes say we should eat at Santiago’s Mexican Restaurant. But there are plenty of choices.
Sierra Vista - Rodeway Inn breakfast included. I wouldn’t expect anything fabulous, but it should be adequate. This is an army base town (large). For some reason there are 5-6 asian food restaurants right around our Rodeway. 123 Street Tacos is very close. It has 4.9 stars from 119 reviews. We are there on Taco Tuesday - $1.50 tacos. Sounds like a great lunch spot.
Patagonia - no breakfast. Town has 5-6 restaurants - Italian, pizza, mexican, a saloon. None have super good ratings . . . but we can fill our bellies.
Amado - It’s a B&B. Full breakfast included - sausage, eggs, potatoes, pancakes, etc. They also have cold cereal and oatmeal. For dinner there are two restaurants - the Firefly is attached to the B&B and is pricey. Meatloaf for dinner is $21. The Cow Palace has the assortment of foods you would expect for the name. Meatloaf there is $13. https://d3ciwvs59ifrt8.cloudfront.net/014fd384-d12b-4c2e-a7b2-8b248dad7dd3/198c641b-26fb-43ff-bf2f-c67f3d605a8e.pdf
