Changes

Hanmer Springs Interlude

If nothing else, the last few days have been a learning experience. Things cannot go on as presently. So in the eternal words of Chet Atkins and Mark Knopfler, there’ll be some changes made (look it up).

The load needs to be lightened (not a hard decision). This necessitates staying under a roof every night, which in turn means limited route options.  And not trying to go up crazy hills.

Reorganising and replanning will take a little while.  Excess weight needs to be sent home.  The lady in the post office became my new best friend (she definitely does this regularly).  It worked out, my load reduced by 12kg.

There was time to look around, visit the cafes, a rejuvenating swim at the hot pools and to go for a walk in the hills.

Hanmer Springs (population 800) is famous for the hot pools, it’s a big draw. Between that and all the cyclists passing through it seems to be doing quite well.

I met several cyclists in the main street. One had three inner tubes fail, one after the other, 5km (3 miles) from Acheron; one was going for a massage; one was cleaning his bike in the park so he could get it on a long distance bus as he had run out of time.

Dealing with changing plans seems to be common.  If I can get a few hundred more kilometres I’ll be happy.
