Udine to Pordenone
Our day began with a tour of Udine. We climbed the hilltop for a good view of the city and palace, and stayed around long enough to watch the bell chime atop the clock tower - two striking figurines hammered away at the central bell. Down from the hill again, we visited the public market and I happily feasted on a quarter of a roasted chicken.
We enjoyed a very pretty ride to our next stop in Pordenone, following a horseshoe shaped route north to cross the Tagliamento River at Spilimbergo before turning south again. We had great views of the mountains and very quiet roads the entire day. We had some significant navigation problems though - we really needed a more detailed map for the whole region.ive
Pordenone is another very attractive medium sized city. It has more than its share of attractive architecture and a striking pedestrian area - a major shop-lined strip over a quarter mile long. We wandered back and forth without success looking for a new outfit for Rachael but did find a new pair of slacks for me, to replace the ones I seem to have left in Franko's home when we changed out of our wet clothes. We also found a new bike tire, to replace the creaky old one from Yugoslavia that has become progressively more annoying over the past week. It was a great relief to be able to cycle in silence once more.
