Isny Loop Ride

Today's agenda included a morning loop ride through Isny where we planned to stop for a nice lunch and explore a little of the town. Over dinner last night we jettisoned Suzanne’s original 40 mile route through the hillier south and devised a new track with fewer miles and less elevation. Considering how “on the fly” the route developed, it turned out to be a pleasant day that gave us a new perspective of the Allgäu.

It was another blue sky day as we retrieved the bikes and headed out through the small enclave of Neutrauchburg. We passed through a short, lovely stretch of woodlands that opened up to the lush, rolling hillsides of the Allgäu that we’ve enjoyed so much this week. Turning south, we  dropped down to Eglofs for a look-see around the town square ringed by colorfully shuttered buildings.

Another day of blue sky and sunshine - we've have great weather thus far for our spin around the Allgäu

A memorial to German soldiers killed in WWI and WWII. Unlike France, I've seen few German towns with memorials listing the names of those who died for Germany

According to the RWGPS route map, our track beyond Eglofs included a nice flat stretch along the Obere Argen river before beginning our gradual climb back up towards Insy. How looks can be deceiving. The “flat” was actually punctuated with several steep spikes on gravel and a harrowing descent down a narrow path “not recommended for bicycles.” We came through it all unscathed, and soon were cycling in a small valley along the Obere Argen, which forms part of the border between the German states of Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria.

Along the Obere Argen river, which in this area forms the boundary between Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria.

Looking across the river at Bavaria, but you can't get there from here

Privacy wasn't such as big a concern for these residents of Baden-Württemberg

We arrived in Isny around noon and settled on Indian food for lunch, finding a shaded outdoor table to enjoy the daily specials: vegetarian taldi for Suzanne and grilled duck in spicy curry for me. We explored a bit of the town, but the bright sun soon had us back on our bikes for the short ride to our Schloss. We spent the afternoon resting and journaling and took a light meal at the grill across the street before calling it a day, a very nice day.
