The Palatine Chapel: A photo gallery
Capella Palarina (the Palatine Chapel) is in its own way as remarkable as the Monreale Cathedral, but on a much smaller scale It is also a Norman mosaic masterpiece, built in the 1130's under the rule of William II about thirty years before he commissioned the great cathedral only six miles away. It shares the same overall artistic style and many of the same themes as the much larger cathedral. In some ways it is an easier site to visit because of its smaller scale - the great mosaics and the ceiling are much closer to the ground and easier to appreciate the detail of. Like the cathedral, it is an awe inspiring creation that feels like it would merit many viewings. Certainly if we make it back to Palermo we would visit them both again.
