Wrapping up - Bicycling SF to LA on the Pacific Coast - CycleBlaze

Wrapping up

We had allotted 9 days for this trip but ended up finishing it 7 days. I asked Nikhil if he would have done anything differently and he said he would have made some improvements to his bike’s comfort.

We didn't have any major issues. A few minor issues and their mitigations:

  • Rear derailleur position knocked out of alignment by pothole in SF -> avoided shifting into easiet gear
  • Rear rack came off supports -> secured with zip ties
  • 1 flat tire -> replaced tube
  • Missed one or two turns on the route, but we noticed pretty quickly

In total we biked 506 miles with 22,000 ft of elevation in 42 hours of moving time over 7 days.

10/12/2023 - SF to Mountain View

  • 60 miles, 900 ft elevation, 4:40 riding time

10/13/2023 - Mountain View to Moss Landing

  • 67 miles, 4,000 ft elevation, 5:56 riding time

10/14/2023 - Moss Landing to Lucia

  • 73 miles, 5,500 ft elevation, 6:41 riding time

10/15/2023 - Lucia to San Luis Obispo

  • 87 miles, 4,500 ft elevation, 7:39 riding time

10/16/2023 - San Luis Obispo to Lompoc

  • 55 miles, 2,400 ft elevation, 4:33 riding time

10/17/2023 - Lompoc to Ventura

  • 88 miles, 3,100 ft elevation, 7:08 riding time

10/18/2023 - Ventura to Santa Monica, Gardena

  • 76 miles, 1,700 ft elevation, 6:14 riding time

Both of our favorite part of the trip was south of Lucia with the sunrise, zero cars/people due to the road closure, and spectacular Pacific Ocean views unobstructed by a car or plane window. In addition to the smells, sounds, and easily stopping whenever we wanted.

Rich FrasierYour tour brought back lots of great memories to me. I did it in the opposite direction in 1972 at the age of 17 with 2 friends. In addition to the incredible beauty of the coastline, it was our first taste of a real adventure. We were young, on our own, and free!

I've lost all my pictures from that trip somewhere in the intervening 50 years, but your journal made it come alive again in my aging brain. Thanks for that!

George (Buddy) HallI enjoyed the journal, thanks for writing it! Someday I may bike the Pacific Coast Route - would you recommend riding from north to south or vice versa? And when is the best time of year to start the ride? Best of luck on your future tours,

Andrew LamTo George (Buddy) HallGlad you enjoyed it! It seems like more people ride north-to-south. That way you are on the side of the road closer to the ocean, and it seems like the winds are in your favor. A friend of mine rode south-to-north but faced strong headwinds.

The ACA website has some info on riding conditions:

"Because coastal traffic tends to be even heavier in summer, we recommend that you ride in the spring or autumn. May and September through October are the best months. During summer, strong winds prevail from north to south."
