We are so happy to be back in Fitchenwalde, staying with and enjoying a visit with Karin. You know that you have made a good friend when the passage of 5 years does not make a difference. Within minutes, we were laughing and talking in our German /English way with lots of google translate as well. She is such a good friend and we value her hospitality.
We are staying in a cabin at her friend’s home nearby as Karin is preparing to do some work at her cabin. We walked over to Karin’s for breakfast and I think that the picture below tells the story of what a good host she is.
Fresh warm buns, cheese, smoked salmon from Norway, many kinds of meat and wurst, etc. We feel very pampered by this lovely woman in her home.
Then we went for kaffee and kuchen at the Kloster Cafe in Lhenin. Barry had a chocolate marzipan torte, Karin and I had the mocha torte. This historic and popular cafe has been in operation since the 18th century.
We have been wanting to have Spargel throughout our journey but as we don’t have a way to cook it properly, we have resisted buying it. It has been worth the wait, as Beelitz region is known for its spargel and Karin has brought us to this farm where she feels that the best spargel is grown.
In the barn, you can get the spargel cleaned and pealed in this extraordinary machine. It is hard to explain the appeal of this white spargel (asparagus) except to say that the flavour is sweet, the texture is tender yet dense and the experience of eating it is so satisfying. It helps that it is fresh, well prepared by Karin and topped simply with melted butter.
At Karin’s feeder, we are enjoying seeing German birds that are similar to the ones we know in Canada, but with different markings, such as this woodpecker.
I seem to be eating a lot, but that is so much a part of Karin’s hospitality and we are enjoying it. Dinner is one of her grandmother’s recipes of a meatloaf with bacon creating a sauce, an amazing gravy full of herbs, spices and whole cloves, spargle salad and potatoes.
